Why I Went Natural

So, July 10 i cut off all of my relaxed ends and was officially natural. Since I made the change it feels like I'm constantly being asked why I went natural. Some ask, "Was your hair damaged?" or "Did you go natural to feel closer to your African roots?" lol To the first question the answer was no, my hair was lovely before I cut it.
(pics are 4inches shorter than when cut, no transitioning pics)

And to the second question, I use all the strength in me not to laugh. I do not feel anymore black now than I did with a perm. I wanted to remind her that "others" will see you the same regardless of whether you have straight hair or not, perfect example would be Don Imus calling the rutgers team a bunch of NAPPYHEADED ho's, although just about all of those girls have a perm. And I couldn't feel more African being that most African women either get perms or wear extensions so that's definately not it.

I decideded to go natural for 3 main reasons:

1. Maintaining relaxed hair was getting expensive. $65/ touch- up and $15/ trim is not where its at for me. and even though i would only get 3- 4 touchups a year that adds up to alot over time

2. I would ALWAYS burn when I got touch- ups and i was tired of the pain. Actually knowing what is in relaxers made me feel foolish for putting harmful chemicals on my scalp. (def not knocking anyone who does it though)

3.When I asked my self why I was getting perms I could not find a good answer. I was doing it out of habit, not desire.

Now that I'm natural I don't think I'll ever go back because:

Natural hair is easier for me.With my hair the way it is now I never "need" to get my hair done, but rather i can go only when I want to. I trim my own hair now, learned how to cornrow, and all is well with the world. I love being able to get up in the morning, wash my hair, and leave the house with it still wet. This is how God intended me to look so I will embrace it and love me. All of me, especially my hair, because it is what it is. So I will use this blog to record my natural hair journey, and to post any other feelings I please.

Your hair looks beautiful either way. I know what you mean about the expense related with relaxed hair. It's crazy.
